Horatio Alger, Jr. was in born in 1832 and became one of most popular and socially influential American authors of the 19th century. He wrote over 100 rags to respectability novels. In Alger's world, everyone, no matter how poor or powerless, could succeed through hard work, honesty, perseverance and a bit of luck. Ragged Dick, or Street Life in New York with the Bootblacks was his first bestseller.
